Cochrane: the polar bears everyone knows, and the man behind the coffee cup
Most people who stop in Cochrane are headed for the Polar Bear Express to Moosonee, or they've seen the Habitat on a road-trip list. Both are worth it. The museum across town honours a man most of the country only knows as a coffee cup.
With an hour, see the Polar Bear Habitat on Drury Park Road, where Heritage Village shares the same gate. With a full day, add the Tim Horton Museum at the Events Centre east of downtown, the working train station on Railway Street, and a meal at Golden Flower. Plan around the season: the Habitat is open seven days a week for most of the year but keeps shorter hours in winter, and Nanook's Snack Shack at Heritage Village only opens in July and August.
Cochrane sits on Highway 11, east of Kapuskasing, and it's usually a stop on the way to somewhere else: the train north, the drive further into the northeast. Park the car anyway.

Highway 11, the Trans-Canada, runs straight through Cochrane, so there is no detour to make.

The Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat describes itself as the only facility in the world dedicated to the care of polar bears, spread across 24 acres of outdoor enclosures. It opens seven days a week for all but a couple of holidays, with shorter hours through the winter. Check its own site for current hours and admission before you drive up.
Heritage Village

Attached to the Habitat is Heritage Village, a walk-through recreation of Cochrane in the early 1900s. The Habitat describes it as a chance to step back in time and feel what life in Cochrane was like then. Nanook's Snack Shack is on the same grounds, open daily in July and August, if you want something to eat while you look around. The village keeps no separate hours, so plan it as part of a Habitat visit.
Tim Horton Museum

The museum inside the Tim Horton Events Centre at 7 Tim Horton Drive holds photographs, books, jerseys and 568 hockey pucks, one for each regular season and playoff point he scored, along with a film about his career. He won four Stanley Cups with Toronto between 1962 and 1967, and the coffee chain that carries his name started in 1964. Hours and admission are not published, so phone 705-272-5084, the number on the Town's museum page, before you drive over. Most Canadians drink the coffee without knowing the man was born in this town, and that is arguably the better story.

Cochrane's own station, downtown at 200 Railway Street, is the southern terminus of the Polar Bear Express and still a working stop, not a museum piece. I stopped in for tea after a long stretch of Northern Ontario highway, and it was worth the ten minutes even if you're not catching a train.

Golden Flower is a dine-in restaurant in town. I stopped in after a long trip through Northern Ontario's highways, and it was exactly what I needed: friendly, and genuinely delicious. It is one of the dine-in places on the Town of Cochrane's where to eat page, and it has no website, so check the hours before you plan a meal around it.

- Parking
- No parking rules for the Habitat, the Events Centre or downtown are published online: no fees, no time limits, no lot names. At the train station, Ontario Northland says the parking area is under construction, with temporary pick-up, drop-off and pedestrian routes, so follow the posted signs.
- Public washrooms
- No public washroom locations are published for Cochrane, and the only ones named on the Town's parks page are portable toilets at a park. Neither the Habitat nor the Tim Horton Events Centre publishes washroom information, so plan around their opening hours and ask at the desk.
- Habitat season and hours
- Per the Habitat, it opens 9:00 to 17:00 from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving and 10:00 to 16:00 from Thanksgiving to Victoria Day, seven days a week for 363 days a year, closed only on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
- Habitat admission
- Per the Habitat: adults $17.60, seniors 65 and over $13.20, children 5 to 18 $13.20, under 4 free, and a family pass for two adults and two children $55.00.
- Accessibility at the Habitat
- The Habitat says every pathway and building is wheelchair and stroller accessible on hard gravel, that winter is challenging on packed snow, and that it can help with mobility if you call ahead. Dogs are not permitted, and that includes service dogs; the Habitat asks service-dog owners to call ahead so it can make arrangements.

- Nothing on accessibility is published for the Tim Horton Museum itself. The Events Centre that houses it says only that its community hall has a ground-level entrance: phone 705-272-5084 to ask. Ontario Northland links an accessibility policy but publishes nothing about the station; the ticket office is 705-272-4228.

- The Tim Horton Events Centre has an arena, a public pool and the museum under one roof. Per the Town, the pool costs $6.67 for an adult and $5.31 for a child or senior, and winter public skating is $5.00. The Railway Cafe inside the station is the indoor coffee stop.
- Food
- The Railway Cafe sits inside the station at B-200 Railway Street, 705-272-6007, for coffee and simple food; its hours are not published. Golden Flower is on 6th Avenue. Nanook's Snack Shack at the Habitat opens 10:00 to 16:00 daily in July and August, per the Habitat.
- The train north
- The Polar Bear Express runs from Cochrane station to Moosonee on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from the end of October to June, per Ontario Northland. The ticket office is open daily 7:15 to 23:45, closed 15:00 to 16:00 Tuesday to Sunday. Check the schedule before building a day around it.

How to spend an hour, a half day or a full day
One hour: the Polar Bear Habitat on Drury Park Road, with Heritage Village inside the same gate. A half day: add the Tim Horton Museum at the Tim Horton Events Centre, just over a kilometre east of the Habitat, and lunch at Golden Flower. Tim Horton was born in Cochrane in 1930, thirty-four years before the coffee chain existed. A full day: all of that, plus the station on Railway Street. Cold or wet: the Events Centre holds an arena and a public pool under the same roof as the museum, and the Railway Cafe inside the station is somewhere warm to sit. Winter packs the Habitat's gravel paths with snow, so save that for a clear day if you use a wheelchair or tire easily.
